The magical answer lies in the heart of Maui's sun-kissed south shore resort area: the Wailea Coastal Walk.

A Scenic Stroll at Any Time

The beauty of the Wailea Coastal Walk extends beyond the early morning sunrise, making it an ideal spot to bury your toes in the sand and witness one of Hawaii's legendary sunsets. On one splendid Maui morning. The true allure lies in the mile-and-a-half Wailea Coastal Walk itself. This paved path gracefully guides you past five crescent-shaped beaches, offering stunning views of West Maui, Lanai, Kahoolawe, and Molokini—among the best in the world. Teeming with sea life, the waters along the walk provide opportunities to spot honu (sea turtles) and, during whale season, catch glimpses of majestic humpback whales.

An Architectural Marvel of Access:

Developed in the '70s, Wailea Resort had a master plan that included a coastal path from Keawakapu Beach in the north to Polo Beach in the south. Each of the eight resorts along the way was tasked with building and maintaining its section of the path, not just for guests but to provide beach access for all. This results in five public beach access areas, all equipped with parking, showers, and, at three locations, additional amenities such as restrooms, barbecue facilities, and picnic areas.

Terrain and Attire:

The trail boasts a well-maintained, paved surface, making it suitable for both walking and jogging. Wear comfortable athletic shoes, a hat, and sunscreen to stay protected from the sun. Lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended for a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Walk or Jog

While some use the path to move between Wailea resorts, many locals and visitors alike enjoy strolling or jogging, creating a vibrant morning scene.  Accessible parking is available at a free beach parking lot just south of the Grand Wailea resort, with additional facilities at the south end of the beach walk at Polo Beach.

Climbing Wailea Point:

The highlight of the journey is the ascent to Wailea Point, offering a perfect whale-watching spot during the season. Adorned with native vegetation and the remnants of an ancient Hawaiian homestead, this elevated stretch combines the beauty of manicured grounds and the rugged Pacific coastline.

Nature Meets Civilization:

Along the path, you're never far from civilization. Numerous beach concessions and hotel restaurants provide refreshments, allowing you to seamlessly merge the tranquility of nature with the conveniences of modern life. As you traverse the trail, you'll encounter renowned resorts like the Fairemont, Four Seasons, Grand Wailea and the Andaz, each contributing to the luxurious ambiance. Keep an eye out for vibrant tropical flowers, indigenous plants, and charming coastal coves. Be sure to have your camera ready for stunning sunset views over the Pacific.

Practical Tips for the Journey:

  • Distance: 3 miles roundtrip
  • Parking: Polo Beach parking lot
  • Best Time: Late afternoon for sunset enchantment
